Card Development

I thought it might be interesting to keep track of how cards developed as the rules and flow of the game changed and as I adjusted the look and feel of the game as well as brought in our artist. Here we see the iterations of the Fortune Teller:

Version 1

Version 1 was a hand written card with no image. I used the same format for each card and then pencil to add in and edit names and abilities as required. This gave maximum flexibility but meant play testers had to deal with my shorthand and abbreviations and the fact that every single card looked the same.

Versions 2, 3 & 4 used the original card frame but saw me introduce icons and symbols, adjust the costings and change the card layout. It was really valuable for later playtests to have an image as people could then visually identify a card they'd seen before and instantly calculate its potential value.

Versions 2, 3 & 4

Version 5

Version 5 was my first look at the artwork for the cards and while never turned into a fully playable card for testing it gave me a great sense of what the final cards would look like.

Version 6

Version 6 is our current state in the design process and while we'd expect symbols and some parts of the card to change it is starting to look a lot more like a finished card
